ISO 14001 internal auditing is the first-party review an organisation carries out on its own environmental management system (EMS) to check that it meets ISO 14001 and works as planned. This five-day course is for practitioners who will audit their own organisation, and its final deliverable is a first-party audit report containing graded nonconformity statements and a corrective action follow-up record.

Introduction

Two standards and one cycle frame the course. ISO 14001:2015 is the international standard specifying how an EMS is set up, run and improved. ISO 19011:2018 gives guidelines for auditing management systems, from audit principles to auditor competence. The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle is the loop that links the clauses of ISO 14001. The level is practitioner: a single in-house audit, not managing a multi-audit schedule or a certification team. Teaching is built around a simulated audit and a site inspection walkthrough at a case manufacturing plant and a hospital.

Course Objectives

  • Distinguish first-party audits from second- and third-party audits and define the in-house auditor's remit
  • Interpret ISO 14001:2015 clauses 4 to 10 and select the evidence that shows each clause is met
  • Apply ISO 19011 guidance to set the objectives, scope and criteria of a single risk-based audit
  • Apply interviews, observation and record sampling to collect objective evidence on site
  • Compare major nonconformities, minor nonconformities and observations and justify the grade given to each finding
  • Interpret auditee root cause analyses and judge whether corrective actions are effective before closure

Target Audience

  • EMS coordinators and environmental officers who maintain the aspects register, who must decide which processes the next in-house audit covers
  • Quality, health and safety practitioners joining a cross-trained auditor pool, who must judge what counts as objective evidence outside their own discipline
  • Operations and site supervisors acting as part-time auditors, who must assess whether colleagues' controls work as written
  • Sustainability analysts who report on environmental objectives, who must interpret whether monitoring records support reported performance
  • Staff maintaining the register of legal and other obligations, who must determine whether the site's own evaluation of those obligations is sound

Course Outline

Day 1: ISO 14001 Clauses and First-Party Auditing Principles

  • First-Party vs Second- and Third-Party Audits: Who Audits Whom and Why
  • ISO 14001:2015 Structure: Clauses 4 to 10 and the Plan-Do-Check-Act Cycle

  • ISO 19011 Auditing Principles: Integrity, Fair Presentation, Due Care and Independence
  • In-House Auditor Role: Competence, Ethics and Conduct When Auditing Colleagues

Day 2: Planning a Single First-Party Audit

  • Audit Objectives vs Scope vs Criteria: Three Planning Terms That Define an Audit
  • Aspects and Impacts: Using the Significant Aspects Register to Target Audit Attention
  • Risk-Based Audit Scheduling: Prioritising Processes by Significance, Past Findings and Change
  • Documented Information Review: EMS Records and Procedures Examined Before Fieldwork
  • Checklists, Working Papers and Opening Meeting: Preparing Auditees and Team for Fieldwork

Day 3: Gathering Objective Evidence on Site

  • Interviews vs Observation vs Record Sampling: Three Sources of Objective Evidence
  • Site Inspection Walkthrough: Observing Waste, Emissions and Spill Controls in Operation
  • Operational Controls and Emergency Preparedness: Testing Clause 8 Arrangements Against Practice
  • Compliance Obligations Evaluation: Verifying How the Site Checks Its Legal Obligations
  • Objectives and Performance Indicators: Tracing Environmental Targets to Monitoring Records

Day 4: Findings, Nonconformities and Corrective Action

  • Major vs Minor Nonconformity vs Observation: Grading Findings Consistently with Evidence
  • Nonconformity Statements: Writing Requirement, Evidence and Finding in Clear Terms
  • Root Cause Analysis: Five Whys and Fishbone Diagrams Behind Auditee Corrective Actions
  • Closing Meeting and Report: Presenting Conclusions to Process Owners and Top Management
  • Corrective Action Follow-Up: Verifying Implementation and Effectiveness Before Closing Findings

Day 5: Simulated First-Party EMS Audit and Report

  • Management Review Inputs vs Audit Outputs: How Findings Reach Top Management Decisions
  • External Certification Stages: Stage 1 and Stage 2 Seen from the Auditee's Side
  • Integrated Audits: Combining ISO 14001 Checks with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001
  • Simulated EMS Audit: Applying Planning, Evidence Gathering and Grading to a Case Site
  • First-Party Audit Report: Finalising Nonconformity Statements and the Corrective Action Follow-Up Record

Skills You Will Gain

  • Clause Interpretation
  • Risk-Based Audit Planning
  • Audit Checklist Design
  • Evidence Sampling
  • Auditee Interviewing
  • Nonconformity Grading
  • Nonconformity Statement Writing
  • Corrective Action Verification

Why Attend This Course

  • From reading ISO 14001 as a list of documents to tracing each clause to what happens on the shop floor
  • From open-ended questioning to interviews, observation and sampling planned against defined audit criteria
  • From findings described as opinions to graded nonconformity statements, each backed by a requirement and evidence
  • From an unwritten sense of how the EMS performs to a first-party audit report with a corrective action follow-up record

Conclusion

An in-house EMS audit is the organisation's own evidence-based check that its environmental arrangements do what the standard and its policy say. The course clarifies three distinctions: first-party versus external audits, audit scope versus audit criteria, and major versus minor nonconformities. It is the right choice for practitioners who will audit processes within their own organisation, and a step below lead auditor training, which adds managing organisation-wide audit schedules and leading third-party audit teams.

Course FAQs

What is ISO 14001 internal auditing?

ISO 14001 internal auditing is a planned, first-party check of an organisation's own environmental management system against ISO 14001:2015 and its own policy, carried out by trained staff who gather objective evidence and report findings to management.

What is the difference between a major and a minor nonconformity in an ISO 14001 internal audit?

A major nonconformity is a missing or failed arrangement that puts a clause's intended outcome at risk, such as no evaluation of legal obligations. A minor nonconformity is an isolated lapse that does not undermine the arrangement as a whole.

Which standard does ISO 14001 internal auditor training follow for audit method?

Audit method follows ISO 19011:2018, the guidelines for auditing management systems, covering principles, planning, evidence collection and reporting. The audit criteria themselves come from ISO 14001:2015 and the organisation's own documented arrangements.

Is ISO 14001 internal auditor training right for an EMS coordinator?

Yes. An EMS coordinator who keeps the aspects and obligations registers learns to test those arrangements from the outside, plan risk-based audits of other departments and verify whether corrective actions raised against them actually work.

What do delegates produce in ISO 14001 internal auditor training?

Delegates produce a first-party audit report from the simulated audit, containing an audit plan summary, graded nonconformity statements with their evidence, observations and a follow-up record for verifying each corrective action.
